The Ultimate Carpet Cleaning Experience That Would Make You Fall in Love with Your Carpets All Over Again

You see, I was born and raised in Japan. Japanese people love sitting on the floor, at least traditionally. Back when I was a little kid, my family always gathered around the very low table (about the same height as a coffee table) in the living room and ate our meals, talked, and watched TV while sitting on the floor. We even slept on a futon (traditional sleeping mat) placed on the floor every night. So, we kept the floor free of dust every day. Japanese are notoriously clean people, at least as a population in general. And I am no exception. We despise dirtiness. Everything must be clean and organized….

Wearing shoes inside the house was absolutely taboo in Japan, and it still is. Upon entering the house, you would take shoes off in the lower designated area on the ground level, then you would step up to the actual living area leaving the shoes behind. So the dirt rarely got inside the house. When I first moved to U.S more than 30 years ago., I lived with traditional American Family who wore shoes inside the house. You have no idea how horrible I felt when I walked inside the house with my shoes on. I felt like I was insulting the family wearing shoes inside, and I hated the fact I was bringing dirt inside the house. I never really got used to it.

Many people take their shoes off at home nowadays here in U.S., but the problem is that unlike Japanese house, there is no separate area to take shoes off. So, the dirt along with other pollutants continue to spread throughout the house.

I face the same issue every day at home. As you might guess, I scrub the dirt off my shoes on the door mat before entering the house to minimize the risk of damaging the carpet, but my kids, on the other hand, don’t even care. Every single day, they bring in dirt, dust, sand, leaves, bugs, even tiny rubber pieces (and a whole bunch of them) from the artificial turf. ‘Being annoyed’ is an understatement. I yell and scream at kids but to no avail. So, I usually end up vacuuming every day myself to prevent the spread of the dirt inside the house.

My mother was an extremely clean person if not a clean freak. She made me get down on my knees and wipe the kitchen floor with a wet rag every day. It was one of my choirs. I had to wipe every square inch of the floor, from corner to corner, edge to edge. If I slacked and missed a spot, she made sure I would go back and re-wipe it. Though we didn’t have wall to wall carpets (except for a small area rug), she made me vacuum the rooms the same way…from corner to corner, edge to edge.

My mother trained me so well. Being clean and meticulous is deeply ingrained in me. I feel like it’s a curse sometimes, especially when it comes to cleaning my own house. Once I start cleaning, I can’t stop until it is perfect. And if it’s not perfect, it annoys me so bad. No. I don’t wake up in the middle of the night and clean, but I sometimes catch myself noticing a little mess and start cleaning the kitchen when I am just about to go to bed.

I hate dirty carpet. How about you? Would you take a nap on the filthy soiled carpet, infested with tiny critters like dust mites, and even deadly mold and fungus?
